Who We Are

Introduction

Angirraq translates to “home” in Inuktitut. While our dedicated staff and management are deeply embedded in communities throughout Nunavut, our group home is proudly situated in Iqaluit. The journey of Angirraq began with our founders as foster parents, and their commitment to the community led to the establishment of our group home, focused on enriching the lives of young people and nurturing their growth.

Our diverse experiences empower us to provide culturally responsive, people-centered care. We are committed to empowering youth and enhancing their personal resilience while helping them develop essential skills and coping strategies. At Angirraq, we believe in the potential of every young individual and strive to support their journey to a brighter future.

Angirraq addresses the unique needs of youth aged 12-19 who are identified as “high risk.” The home’s overarching mission is to serve as a therapeutic space that enhances the health, development, and quality of life for Nunavummiut youth facing significant challenges. We aim to deliver exceptional care to empower youth to reclaim their lives, rebuild family connections, and envision brighter futures.

We achieve this by providing a comprehensive, individualized therapeutic program in a safe and nurturing environment. It is vital in supporting an effective “continuum of care” for youth. It offers residential care services to provide young individuals with a stable and supportive place to live during their journey toward healing and growth.

Goals

The primary objectives of the Angirraq program are:

To stabilize youth in a safe and trusting environment.
Collaborate with youth to develop both short-term and long-term plans.
To implement a continuum of care plan tailored to the individual’s needs.
To rebuild connections between the youth and their families.
To strengthen ties between the youth and their home communities.
To provide stabilization through a structured, culturally supportive living environment alongside individual and group services.
To offer youth the opportunity to engage in educational programs available at local schools.
To create individualized case plans that involve input from the youth, their families or caregivers, and the referring agency.

General Principles

At Angirraq, youth will experience culturally supportive programming, including:

  • Access to guidance from community mentors and elders who provide wisdom and support.

  • Nutritious meals that incorporate traditional foods to connect with their heritage.

  • Voluntary participation in cultural, community, and spiritually enriching activities, which help youth connect with their roots, develop life skills, and build strong relationships.

This holistic environment aims to nurture personal growth, community engagement, and spiritual enrichment, empowering youth to become responsible and resilient members of their community. Through these experiences, they will learn, grow, and thrive in a supportive and culturally rich setting.
